During my spring of 2012 campaign for Milwaukee County Supervisor, one of my main campaign points was “Part-time work does not deserve full-time pay.” Nearly all of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors have full-time jobs OUTSIDE of the County Board. This means that the post of County Supervisor is at best, a part-time job. However, they are paid a full-time salary (50K/year) plus full-time benefits. Good work, if you can get it.
But wait! The down-trodden citizens of Milwaukee County need FULL-TIME representation! They NEED the noble politicians fighting for them on a full-time basis to prevent the forces of evil from overwhelming them. This was the message (not the actual words) of my opponents. In fact, one supervisor was on the news stating that a part-time board was a “fringe idea” and should not be taken seriously.
Well, guess what? The County Board has the ENTIRE month of August off for summer recess. In fact, their recess has already begun. Let me say it again: THE COUNTY BOARD HAS RECESS FOR OVER A MONTH! What does this mean? It means that YOUR tax dollars are paying a local government body to have an extended vacation. Just to put it in perspective, it costs nearly $1,000,000.00 per year, just to have them exist. Therefore, we are giving the county about $83,333.00 in the month of August for them to do NOTHING. It means that all of you who bought into that line of bull dung about needing full-time representation in order to survive have been cheated, suckered, duped, fooled, screwed, punked, whatever you want to call it.
When was the last time YOU had a 4+ week paid vacation? Why is it that those receiving our tax dollars have a higher standard of living than those of us who are paying those dollars? Frankly, the working-class sector of public employees do not get this either. So, what gives? Does that make you mad? Well, apparently not mad enough, because David “Double Dip” Cullen (see previous blog post) won in my race by overwhelming numbers. Perhaps people did not know about this little perk. That is certainly possible, but let me say this: You know it now! So, what are you going to do about it? Don’t make some lame excuse and say “Gee, there is just nothing I can do. Whoa is me.” There is plenty you can do. You can start by PAYING ATTENTION.
You do not need to be a political-hack-wierdo like me, but you can demand accountability from your local officials. You can start by finding out who they actually are. Make a phone call, write a letter, send an e-mail, visit their web site, attend a meeting, sign up for E-notify, ask questions, stay informed! The nonsense will not stop until YOU demand it to stop. So, what are you waiting for?
