Wow, I almost let this one slip past me. Here is another example of our local elected officials “holding the line” on taxes. The complete article is HERE. In short, the property tax levy will only go up by 1%. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Well, let’s do the math. 1% x $1.5 billion = $15 million ($15,000,000.00). That is a lot of zeros! The details of the budget haven’t been finalized yet, so that number is an estimate. Even so, that is the increase for this year alone. Remember, your taxes go up by this amount EVERY YEAR.
But wait, there’s more! There are also fee increases. Here is a quote from the article:
The council also approved increases in various service fees. On an annual basis, the solid-waste fee will go up $8.28 to $179.80; the sewerage fee will go up $4.37 to $87.19; the storm-water fee will go up $4.78 to $64.52; and the snow and ice removal will stay at $33.23 for the typical property owner.
Here’s another keeper from the article:
Ald. Michael Murphy, the chair of the Finance and Personnel Committee, called the $1.5 billion budget difficult, but fiscally conservative.
I suppose from a Milwaukee socialist’s point of view, it is fiscally conservative. Holding the line on taxes? Sounds rather like “let me hold your wallet for you.” Remember, this is in ADDITION to what Milwaukee County is taxing you as well. A few million here and a few million there and pretty soon we are talking about real money.
But we can’t blame the socialist Common Council for stealing our money. That’s like getting mad at a hornet for stinging you. It’s simply what they do. The bigger question is, what are YOU going to do? This is normally where the excuses are inserted by the citizenry. So, before you go down that road, I will offer a suggestion. Go to this website http://city.milwaukee.gov/ElectedOfficials and contact your alderman. Let him/her know that you demand a CUT in taxes, not simply a small increase in amount of taxes. If you refuse to speak up, don’t complain when you are eventually taxed out of your home.
